C.S. Lewis, "Mere Christianity"

Right now I'm still reading through C.S. Lewis's "Mere Christianity," which is the collection of his radio talks done in England during WWII. At the end of chapter 3 Lewis is finishing up a chapter on proving the identity of Christ as a divine being. I'm not going to quote the whole chapter to you so you should probably read the book yourself to get the full idea; however, I want to share a bit of it.

"Christ says that He is 'humble and meek' and we believe Him; not noticing that, if He were merely a man, humility and meekness are the very last characteristics we could attribute to some of His sayings."

I agree wholeheartedly with the above statement. What human being can honestly say that he is humble and meek? We might say that about others, but that is only because we don't know their deepest thoughts. Show me one person that truly believes he or she is 'humble and meek' and I'll show you someone who is overflowing with pride because they even dare to make that statement. Christ had to be 100% God to not be overeaten with pride like the rest of us are.

I want to leave you with one last quote from Lewis.

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any promising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."

Around the world...

Here a few headlines that have surprised me lately...
"...AND OCTUPLETS MAKE 14"
-Young woman, living with parents has six kids then gives birth to octuplets...WOW. 14 kids...o my.
"UNINVITED SISTER ATTACKS BRIDE AT RECEPTION"
- Police say this uninvited 23 yr old sister showed up at her sister's wedding reception and attacked her, smearing her makeup and "pulling out clumps of hair." Now there's some familial love.
"STATUE DEDICATED TO BUSH SHOE-THROWER"
- A statue of a giant, sofa-sized bronze shoe has now been built in honor of the infamous shoe-throwing journalist. Seriously now, even if you disagree with American politics and values, do you really make a statue of a giant shoe? Aren't people in your country in poverty and you build a giant shoe? Really guys...
Well, that's all for now. I must say that I am badly wanting to see the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Anyone else want to?

Just to check back in

Just checking back in since I've been away from blogging for a couple of weeks. I've become quite the ebayer lately. As of last night I've officially sold 6 things on ebay! Woohoo! I'm not becoming a millionaire by ebay, but $5 and $10 sales aren't bad. So now I'm off to the post office to ship one of my sales.

Can you love, feed, clothe and educate a child?

YES YOU CAN!
There is always a lot of emphasis on helping people at Christmas.
Children always make people smile.
So why not make a child smile year round?
The world food crisis has worsened conditions for families all over the world.
Christ has called us to serve and to care for the orphans and widows.
So why is it so hard for us?
I can honestly say that sponsoring a child through Compassion is one way that we can serve Christ and care for the children of the world.
Look at these faces and pray for them today.
